Background of the Study
Transportation management systems (TMS) are software solutions designed to plan, execute, and optimize the movement of goods within a supply chain. TMS systems play a crucial role in enhancing supply chain agility by providing real-time data on transportation routes, delivery schedules, and carrier performance. This allows companies to respond swiftly to changes in demand, disruptions, and market conditions. The ability to adapt quickly to such changes is particularly important in industries where timing and logistics are critical, such as the manufacturing and construction sectors.
Lafarge Africa, a leading producer of cement and building materials, operates across Nigeria, with a significant presence in Kebbi State. The company faces challenges in managing the transportation of raw materials and finished products across vast distances, given the state’s geographical location and infrastructural challenges. To improve its supply chain agility, Lafarge Africa has implemented a robust TMS to optimize transportation routes, reduce delivery delays, and improve the overall efficiency of its logistics operations.
This study aims to explore the impact of transportation management systems on the supply chain agility of Lafarge Africa in Kebbi State. It will assess how the adoption of TMS has improved Lafarge's ability to adapt to market changes and optimize its logistics operations.
Statement of the Problem
In a highly competitive market, supply chain agility is essential for companies to maintain a competitive edge. Transportation, being one of the most critical components of the supply chain, plays a pivotal role in determining the speed and efficiency of product delivery. While Lafarge Africa has invested in transportation management systems to optimize its logistics, it is not clear to what extent the TMS has contributed to improving the company's overall supply chain agility in Kebbi State. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the role of TMS in enhancing Lafarge Africa’s ability to respond to disruptions and optimize supply chain performance.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of transportation management systems on supply chain agility at Lafarge Africa in Kebbi State.
To assess how TMS has improved Lafarge Africa’s logistics performance in terms of cost reduction, delivery times, and customer satisfaction.
To explore the challenges and benefits associated with the implementation of TMS in Lafarge Africa’s supply chain.
